All positions are classified into one of 3 Groups (Group 1, Group 2, or Group 4). Most positions are classified as Group 1. Certain positions specifically identified by statute are classified in Group 2 or in Group 4.
Group 1 - All positions not specifically classified as either Group 2 or Group 4. Group 1 includes all Administrative, Clerical, Technical, Labor, and Education positions as well as all Elected Officials.
Group 2 - Specifically named positions such as higher education public safety positions, certain municipal ambulance attendents who also respond to fires, certain municipal electricians, certain court and probation officers, certain correctional facility personnel, and certain hospital personnel with care and custody of mentally ill.
Group 4 - Municipal Firefighters and Police Officers, Corrections Officers, and other specifically named positions of municipal gas and power plants. Age must be an established bona fide job requirement for Group 4 employees. Municipal Firefighters, Police Officers and Correction Officers have a mandatory retirement age of 65.
What is the difference between Group classification? Age/benefit factors are higher at younger age as incentive for Groups 2 & 4 to retire at younger age.
